Chapter 3: Family & Safety
Lily: "Nobody gets left behind! ¡Nadie se queda atrás!"
The Rangers' first rule is to stay together. Every Ranger knows their meeting place, carries their name card, and knows which grown-ups are safe helpers.
What Rangers know
- Two meeting places. Pick one close to home and one farther away. Say them out loud often.
- Name card. Carry a card with your name, your grown-up's name and a contact. A grown-up writes it, and it stays zipped in your safe pocket. Show it only to a helper.
- Buddy system. Everyone has a buddy. Head counts happen often, the way Lily counts the crew.
- If we get separated: stop, stay where you are, and look for an official helper, such as someone in a uniform at a help desk or a helper with a badge. Say your name and your grown-up's name.
- Promises from strangers. If someone offers rides, sweets, money or "come with me", say no, stay with your group, and tell your grown-up.
- Your papers are yours. Never give away or trade your name card or papers. A grown-up from your group handles them.
- Go Bag (Card #GB1 "Ready by the Door"). A small, light bag packed with a grown-up and kept by the door: water, a snack, a light, a whistle, a warm layer, the safe pocket (photo, name card, contact) and a comfort toy. Lily's is small and pale yellow, Ricky's is bigger and dark green, and Sami's rides on her wheelchair.
- Whistle: three toots means "help, find me".
Lily: "Pack it light, keep it right, ready by the door, day or night!"
- Roads and trucks. Walk on the side, facing traffic, away from the edge. Never play on roads or near parked or moving trucks; drivers can't see small people. Hold little hands. Stay far back when aid trucks arrive, until helpers say to come.
- Crowds and food lines. Stay with your grown-up and hold hands. If the crowd pushes, move to the side, not the middle. Know the meeting spot.
- Aid is free. No one is allowed to ask you for anything in return for food, water or kits (Chapter 14).
- Older Rangers (12+): family tracing. If family are missing, a grown-up registers them with the official Red Cross / Red Crescent tracing service (Restoring Family Links), never through strangers or social media posts.
